Homeowners insurance provides financial protection against disasters. A standard policy insures your home itself and the most personal items or belongings you have in the home.
Homeowners insurance is a package policy. This means that it covers both damage to your property and your liability or legal responsibility for any injuries and property damage you or members of your family cause to other people. This can and does include damage caused by any household pets.
The damage caused by most catastrophic disasters is covered but there are a few exceptions. The exceptions do include damage caused by floods, earthquakes and improper maintenance which can be known to be the most significant amounts of damage to property. Some standard homeowner's insurance companies offer earthquake coverage to be added on but generally at a limited coverage limit. You need to purchase two separate policies one for flood and the other for earthquake for proper coverage. Maintenance-related issues are always the homeowners' responsibility.
Special Note: This summary outlines in general terms the coverages afforded under some policies. Examine the policy carefully for any exclusions, limitations, or any other terms or conditions that may specifically affect coverage. The terms and conditions of the policy prevail.
